Dog Brains Can Tell a Scared Face From a Sad One, Scans Show

Pet dogs' brains respond to a frightened face differently than to a sad or angry one, a Cell Press study published August 7, 2026, found, the first evidence that dogs tell negative emotions apart.

The finding gives a biological footing to something owners have claimed for years, and it sharpens a harder question: did dogs learn to read us, or did domestication rewire them for it?

Researchers led by Raúl Hernández-Pérez and Laura Cuaya at the University of Vienna trained pet dogs to lie still inside an fMRI scanner, which tracks blood flow in the brain, while pictures of strangers' faces appeared.

In a first experiment with eight dogs, happy faces lit up the temporal cortex, tied to higher-level processing, and the caudate nucleus, a region linked to reward.

"It suggests that happy human faces may have emotional significance for dogs," Cuaya said.

A second experiment showed 12 dogs’ faces expressing happiness, anger, fear, and sadness, and a machine-learning program sorted the resulting brain patterns.

Smiles stood out most clearly, but a whole-brain analysis also separated fear from anger and sadness, so the dogs did more than file expressions as good or bad.

The authors cautioned that a still photo captures only a sliver of real communication, since dogs normally read faces alongside body language, voice, and scent.

Behavioral studies had hinted at this skill long before anyone could see it in a scanner.

In 2015, a team at the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna reported in Current Biology that dogs trained to tell happy from angry faces using only half of each face could apply the rule to new faces and to the untrained half, ruling out cues such as visible teeth. 

A year later, University of Lincoln researchers showed 17 pairs of dogs happy and angry faces while playing a single voice, and the animals looked longer at the face matching the voice's mood in 67% of trials, according to a Biology Letters paper.

The dogs matched dog faces and barks as well as human faces and speech, which suggested they merge sight and sound into one emotional picture.

A landmark 2002 study in Science led by Brian Hare found that adult dogs beat human-raised wolves at following a person's pointing and gaze to hidden food, while the two species tied on a memory task with no social cue.

Puppies as young as nine weeks, including some raised in a kennel with only minutes of human contact a day, used the cues as well as puppies raised in family homes.

Hare's team concluded that domestication had been selected for the skill rather than daily exposure to people teaching it.

Wolves, however, refuse to stay on the sidelines of that story.

A July 2025 study in Animal Cognition compared human-socialized wolves and dogs greeting a bonded or familiar person through a fence and found little overall difference in their facial expressions.

Dogs spent more time close to the person, gazing and wagging, and showed more submissive ear positions, while wolves kept their ears forward.

The people in the study also smiled more at the dogs than at the wolves, which the authors said may reflect a human bias that shapes how each species behaves toward us.

A 2024 study in Scientific Reports decoded wolf facial movements well enough to predict nine distinct emotional states, but the same method struggled with rescue dogs, confusing friendly with fearful.

The authors blamed selective breeding, which gave many dogs faces unlike a wolf's, and suggested dogs lean on their voices to compensate.

Taken together, the studies suggest domestication did not simply make dogs smarter about people but returned their communication toward us, sharpening how they read our faces even as their own faces grew harder to read.

As Cuaya put it, "They have evolved with us to understand our expressions and cooperate with us, and recognizing that can change how we communicate with and care for them."
