Pepsi has officially entered the gut-health beverage race with the nationwide Black Friday release of Pepsi Prebiotic Cola, a lower-sugar soda built around added prebiotic fiber. Prebiotic fiber refers to plant-based carbohydrates that the body cannot digest but which serve as fuel for beneficial gut bacteria, helping support a healthier microbial balance.

The drink became available online first, landing on Amazon, Walmart.com, TikTok Shop, Gopuff, DashMart, and Kroger.com in limited quantities. A full retail rollout is planned for early 2026.

Pepsi Prebiotic Cola is available in Original and Cherry Vanilla flavors, with 30 calories, 5 grams of cane sugar, and 3 grams of prebiotic fiber per can.

This launch follows PepsiCo’s $1.95 billion acquisition of Poppi earlier this year, signaling a major push into functional beverages. Poppi is a fast-growing prebiotic soda brand known for using apple cider vinegar and fruit flavors to create low-sugar drinks marketed as better-for-you alternatives to traditional soft drinks.

Pepsi’s rollout is being framed as its biggest cola innovation in over two decades, backed by a national campaign including a shoppable placement during Amazon Prime Video’s Black Friday Football broadcast.

Prebiotic sodas utilize plant-based fibers such as inulin, which feed beneficial gut bacteria. These ingredients are not digested by the body and have become central to the rising “modern soda” trend.

Most prebiotic drinks contain 2~9 grams of fiber, still far from the daily recommended 25–38 grams, yet offer a significant reduction in sugar and calories compared with classic sodas.

A traditional can of Pepsi carries about 41 grams of sugar and 150 calories, making the new formulation a major shift toward reduced-sugar options.

The move aligns with explosive growth in gut-health beverages, a category that saw more than 300% growth in 2023 alone.

Coca-Cola entered the prebiotic market earlier with its Simply Pop line, which features 6 grams of prebiotic fiber and no added sugar across flavors like Strawberry, Pineapple Mango, and Lime.

Pepsi’s approach differs: instead of launching under a sub-brand, it is attaching the functional formula directly to the Pepsi name, emphasizing taste continuity with the original cola.

These different identities matter because consumers still see legacy cola brands as high-sugar while perceiving newer brands like Poppi and Olipop as health-forward and trendy.

Coca-Cola has openly stated that Simply Pop is aimed at “wellness-focused Gen Z-ers and Millennials,” banking on younger consumers’ growing interest in functional drinks and brand trust. Meanwhile, data show that sales of digestive-health sodas surged by over 300 % in 2023,  a clear sign the prebiotic soda market is no longer niche.

Demand for gut-health sodas continues to rise, but brands must navigate higher production costs, stricter ingredient-transparency expectations, and consumer confusion about what prebiotics actually do.

Many consumers still experience digestive discomfort from inulin, making education and clear labeling essential as the category scales.

Still, over 40% of functional-beverage shoppers say they want to try new gut-health drinks, fueling rapid innovation and aggressive competition between brands.

Pepsi’s early nationwide push signals that the fight for dominance in this growing category is just beginning, with both beverage giants betting that gut-health will shape the next era of soda.
