Washington, D.C., U.S. Capitol — February 24, 2026. President Donald Trump delivered the first State of the Union address of his second term before a joint session of Congress, presenting his administration’s record and priorities to lawmakers and the public. The speech lasted one hour and 47 minutes, making it the longest State of the Union address in U.S. history.

The State of the Union address is an annual constitutional requirement in which the president reports on the nation’s condition and outlines policy goals. Trump’s address came at a politically sensitive time, as polls indicated many Americans remained uneasy about affordability and leadership.

He framed his administration’s first year back in office as a dramatic recovery, declaring that the country had experienced “a turnaround for the ages” after inheriting what he called “a nation in crisis.”

Trump opened with a sweeping assessment of his administration’s performance, stating, “Tonight, after just one year, I can say with dignity and pride that we have achieved a transformation like no one has ever seen before.” He cited economic growth, lower crime, and improved military recruitment as evidence of success.

However, fact-checking organizations and analysts noted that inflation had already declined to about 3 percent by the time he took office, crime rates had been trending downward before his return, and military recruitment had also rebounded in the 2024 fiscal year before the election. One analysis concluded that “Mr. Trump’s claims of a historic turnaround are not backed by the facts.”

Despite these contested claims, Trump framed the economy as “roaring” and emphasized stock market gains, job growth, and lower energy prices as signs of recovery. He also highlighted immigration enforcement and tariffs as central to his economic and national security agenda.

Trump challenged Democrats to stand in support of certain statements, including his assertion to members of the joint session of Congress that they should stand up from their seats if they agree that “the first duty of the American government is to protect American citizens. Not illegal aliens.”

When many remained seated, he responded, “You should be ashamed of yourself, not standing up.” Throughout the speech, he repeatedly criticized Democratic lawmakers, calling them “crazy” and portraying them as out of touch with national priorities.

Trump also used the platform to honor military personnel and athletes, presenting them as examples of national resilience and achievement. At the same time, the president emphasized economic indicators such as stock market performance and job growth, asserting that the country now had a “roaring economy.” Critics argued that these claims did not fully acknowledge ongoing affordability challenges faced by many households.

Foreign policy featured in the latter portion of the speech, particularly tensions with Iran. Trump stated that he preferred diplomacy but warned against nuclear ambitions, saying the United States had not heard Iran promise “we will never have a nuclear weapon.” He also addressed tariffs and trade, calling upon a recent Supreme Court ruling against his tariff program “very unfortunate” while insisting he could continue pursuing similar policies through other means. Some lawmakers questioned the feasibility of his proposals, including his suggestion that tariffs could eventually replace income taxes as a major revenue source.

Several lawmakers interrupted the speech or displayed signs, while others left the chamber. Afterward, Democratic officials described the address as misleading and divisive. Representative Brad Sherman said, “Donald Trump told us that the economy is ‘wonderful’ and that everything is ‘affordable’” and suggested that many Americans would disagree.

Senator Chris Coons argued that the president had missed an opportunity for unity, stating, “We got a campaign rally where he lied, ducked responsibility, and had zero answers for Americans worried about the challenges they’re facing.” Critics also pointed to omissions, including limited discussion of affordability, protests related to immigration enforcement, and the release of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein.

Republicans, by contrast, praised the speech and agreed with Trump’s narrative of national recovery. Representative Byron Donalds wrote that “in just ONE YEAR, we have achieved a transformation like NO OTHER,” pointing to economic growth, border security, and reduced crime.

Other Republican lawmakers highlighted the president’s emphasis on manufacturing and national pride, with one describing the address as “the strongest State of the Union” he had attended. Supporters framed the speech as evidence of renewed strength and direction under Trump’s leadership. Moreover, it has been argued that the administration's “America First” policies constitute a necessary corrective to previous leadership.

In the days following the address, reactions remained polarized. One Democratic lawmaker summarized her party’s view by saying, “America is less safe, more divided, and more expensive than ever before.” Meanwhile, Trump and his allies continued to describe the nation as entering a “golden age” and highlighted the speech as a milestone in his second term.
