Ancient DNA Reveals Close Kin Marriage and Family Sacrifice in Silla Tombs

DNA from 78 skeletons at a 1,500-year-old Korean cemetery traces marriages between close relatives and whole families buried as sacrifices, cracking open a social order scholars once read only from tomb walls.

The finding hands archaeologists one of their first genetic maps of an early Korean kingdom, showing that blood ties shaped not only who ruled but who died beside the powerful.

A team led by Jeong Choong-won of Seoul National University sequenced genome-wide data from 44 tombs at the Imdang-Joyeong burial complex in Gyeongsan and published the results on April 10, 2026 in the journal Science Advances.

Excavators have opened more than 1,600 tombs at the site and identified over 259 sets of human remains, laid down across roughly one century between the fourth and sixth centuries.

The cemetery served Silla, a kingdom that ruled parts of the Korean peninsula from 57 BCE to 935 CE and stood as one of three states before Silla unified much of the land in the seventh century.

Across the bodies they could sequence, the researchers counted five marriages between people related within six degrees of kinship, a pattern that ran through both grave owners and the attendants sacrificed with them.

Close-kin marriage joined partners who shared a recent ancestor, such as first or second cousins, a habit that packed wealth and rank inside a small ring of powerful families.

That pattern matches a custom already known from history, since Silla's rigid bone-rank system pushed its highest sacred-bone royals to marry close kin so that only children born to two royal parents could hold the throne.

Marrying within the group, a practice scholars call endogamy, kept the community genetically tight and let the team trace relatives across separate graves.

The graves also record sunjang, the Silla custom of killing attendants and burying them with a dead noble, which appears in at least 20 two-chambered tombs.

In at least three of those tombs, the DNA analysis tied the sacrificed people to one another as close family, and one grave held a father, a mother, and their child laid to rest together.

"Genetic relatedness among sacrificial individuals over generations may suggest the presence of families that served as sacrificial individuals for the grave owner class for consecutive generations," the researchers wrote in the study.

That possibility sharpens a hard question, whether a family could inherit the duty of dying for its lord instead of meeting that fate one person at a time.

The genomes turned up no real gap in ancestry between the nobles and the people killed beside them, meaning both came from the same local community rather than a captured or foreign underclass.

Medical anthropologists treat the human body as a surface where society writes its rules, and this work lets a strand of DNA reveal family shape, social rank, and manner of death all at once.

Comparable projects have already redrawn the social history of Viking Britain, Bronze Age Europe, and the Maya, showing genomes that expose kinship rules pottery and weapons alone cannot.

The Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Germany, which helped run the sequencing, has driven many of those global studies.

The authors caution that their sample covers a single cemetery near Gyeongsan in North Gyeongsang Province and cannot speak for all of Silla society.

They also stress that the evidence points to a strong likelihood of family-based sacrifice, not firm proof that every sunjang victim died as part of an inherited bloodline. 

The researchers now aim to sequence remains from other Silla sites and from the rival Baekje and Goguryeo kingdoms, testing how tightly ruling families guarded marriage and power.

For a field that long read the past from grave goods, the study marks a turn toward reading the buried people themselves.
