An MIT team enlarged the brain's overnight cleaning waves by playing 50-millisecond pink-noise bursts to 14 sleeping adults, MIT News reported September 9, 2026, a sign the still body runs a busy night shift.
Sleep looks like the body's off switch, yet across the brain, blood, and glands it doubles as an overnight repair crew that keeps a person healthy.
During deep, dreamless sleep, the still-eyed stage known as non-rapid eye movement sleep, large slow electrical waves sweep across the outer brain.
The slow waves squeeze and widen blood vessels, and the shifting blood volume pumps cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), the clear liquid that bathes the brain, to flush out daytime waste.
A 2019 Science study of 13 sleepers first caught this rhythm, with slow brain waves cresting about 6.4 seconds before each fluid wave peaked.
The skull holds a fixed amount of room, so when blood volume pulls back, fluid rushes in to fill the gap.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) team, led by professor Laura Lewis, timed each pink-noise burst to the crest of a slow wave and made both the brain waves and the fluid waves grow larger.
The bursts stayed soft, quiet enough to leave the sleepers undisturbed.
"We found that we were able to increase the size of the CSF flow wave during sleep, which as far as we know, there hasn't been a method to do before," Lewis said.
Lewis cautioned that the work covered only healthy adults, and her team hopes to test whether boosting the brain's waste clearance could someday help prevent the protein buildups linked to Alzheimer's disease.
The night crew also sorts the day's memories.

The immune system keeps its own memory too, and sleep helps it decide which defenses to hold onto.
In a 2026 mouse study in Nature Communications, two weeks of sleep broken every two minutes around a flu shot lowered protective antibodies and cut the share of mice that survived a later infection.
The broken sleep dimmed the signals that immune cells use to coach the B cells that manufacture those antibodies, the study found.
